Make your boss like you more in 3 simple steps
Hello everyone,
One of the nicest that can happen to you as you climb the corporate ladder is to work for a boss who likes you. It will make you much happier at work and is crucial for your career growth and better mental health.
You can make them like you by pro-actively managing the work relationship, and through your personality and habits.
Have you ever read the book by Stephen Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People? I read the book in 1995 and attended a training program as well. The first habit is ‘Be Proactive’.
Be Proactive - take responsibility for your reaction to your experiences, take the initiative to respond positively, and improve the situation. Recognise your Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern.
- Stephen R Covey
I applied this habit of being proactive to almost everything I did professionally, including taking charge of my relationship with my boss and other company executives. The quality of that relationship has determined my work success and career progress. Similarly, you can do the same by taking these 3 simple steps:
Empathise with your boss. Look at the business from their point of view. Make the effort to understand their motivations, their anxieties at work, and what they view as success. Ask them what their major objectives are within the organisation and how you can play your part to support them.
Make their life easier. Anticipate their needs and problems, and go the extra mile to get answers and solutions. If you are given a task to do, always keep them informed and try to finish your work ahead of schedule.
Never make a mistake that will make them look bad in front of their bosses. Always be mindful of the impact of your work on your boss. Always do a bit more to check your work quality and standards. Think about how you can make your boss look good in front of their boss. When you do that consistently, your boss will be very glad to have you on their team, and that is a very positive thing for you.
This will require you to put in a little extra work but think of it as a small investment for a better future.
That’s all from me today. If you found this useful, please share this with your friends and colleagues who might benefit from hearing this today.
